ACA LEVEL II- Essentials of Kayak Touring

General Requirements for all Certifications:
Be at least 18 years old.
Successfully complete an Instructor Certification Workshop (IDW & ICE)
ACA membership including the Safety Education & Instruction Council (SEIC)
Demonstrate a general knowledge of Paddlesports and the ACA
Maintenance Requirements:
Teach at least two courses that meet ACA standards within the four-year certification period and report the results to the National Office
Complete an Instructor Update, at the highest level of certification, during the certification period.
Alternatively, at the discretion of the facilitating IT/ITE, instructors may assist an IDW / ICE or co-teach skills course at the appropriate level in conjunction with a review of SEIC policies and procedures.
Maintain ACA membership and SEIC registration annually
Level II: Essentials of Kayak Touring Instructor Requirements:
Fundamentally, we expect that paddlers should have basic paddling skills, before presenting themselves for evaluation as instructor candidates as below:
The ability to teach and model the basic kayak paddle strokes and maneuvers effectively. This includes:
Forward stroke, to propel the kayak straight forward
Reverse/back stroke, to stop and reverse straight backward
Forward and reverse sweeps, to turn and or spin the kayak
Draw and sculling draw, to move the kayak sideways evenly
Low brace to avoid capsize
Rudder to glide straight and turn to paddle side
Demonstrate the ability to teach and model basic rescue techniques effectively:
Controlled capsize and effectively wet exit the kayak with spray skirt
T-rescue
Side-by-Side
Rafted-T
Scoop
Paddle Float with and w/o sling
Hand of God
Demonstrate knowledge of, and ability to teach, the following effectively:
Safety issues and hazards of flat water kayaking
Weather and tide conditions important to the kayaker
Hypothermia and hyperthermia; prevention and treatment
Signaling devices and safety equipment including VHF radios

ACA Instructors teach paddling skills in approved ACA course outlines after qualifying in various disciplines and at various levels. ACA Instructors are expected to represent and promote the ACA and paddlesports in a positive manner. ACA Instructors do not issue certificates or certify basic skills, but may issue participation cards to students.
Level II Essentials of Kayak Touring is a 3 day program that has 2 days of training and one day of assessment. Candidates should; do their homework, read and familiarize themselves with course outline, practice and become proficient with strokes and rescues, familiarize themselves with presentation topics and be ready to nail them, and last but not least….show up (on time) prepared and ready to go!
This is a fast track approach to receiving a Level II certification to teach kayaking on flat, sheltered waters! Candidates can receive a level 2 certification after these 3 days if they meet the criteria and get approval from the Instructor Trainer.

$375 per person on these dates, 3 day course:
August 17-19
Start/ End: Each day 9am to approximately 5pm
Prerequisite: Students are expected to arrive as experienced flat water paddlers with personal proficiency in basic strokes and rescues in calm, protected conditions with light winds on lakes or ponds.

Includes: Should arrive ready to paddle with all appropriate equipment. We can supply some of the essentials, but students must request this before class.
Does Not Include: lodging, transportation, meals, personal gear and clothing. Students can bring their own boat and gear; both need to be equivalent to gear provided , appropriate for class, in good working order and approved by instructor. Please call 800-310-4504 with any questions.
